Application Of Wood Oil

Breathability is important

The wood should always be cleaned before applying wood oil. However, wood oil must not be applied to wet wood, as water prevents the oil from penetrating the wood and the surface may peel off. New pressure-treated wood is sufficiently dry about 6 months after construction.

During treatment and drying, the temperature of oil, air and surface must be above + 5 °C and the relative air humidity below 80 %. It is not advisable to apply the oil in the harshest sunshine, as drying too quickly will prevent absorption and the treatment may be incomplete, or it may create a non-breathable surface film on the wood. We recommend tinted oil for better UV protection. This will protect the wood from greying.

Before treatment

Sand old or previously treated wood if needed, or clean it with terrace wash. Let it dry properly before treatment. WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original should be mixed thoroughly before use and regularly during use. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. You can use a brush, roller, sprayer, or dip to apply the wood oil. Sprayer makes it easier to apply the oil to the edges and corners. If the oil is not absorbed during the application, an oil film has remained on the surface of the wood from previous treatments, which has not been removed before the treatment. See How to Clean Terrace Properly. Also, remember that the treatment should not be done on wet or rotten wood. In this case, the wood oil will not work as expected or desired.

Application of wood oil

The general guideline for wood oil manufacturers is to treat wood thinly twice, as the majority of wood oil users do. But despite the instructions for two coats in our buckets, WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original can also be used to treat wood by applying only one abundant layer. Two thin layers may not produce the same results, because especially when applying in warm weather, the first application may make it difficult for the wood to absorb the second layer.

If stains remain on the surface after the first application, reapply the stained areas. Wipe off unabsorbed oil about 30 minutes after application with a dry cotton cloth, sheet, or similar. Be careful not to over-treat the wood, as it will cause a film on the surface that will prevent oil from being absorbed.

Processing and drying temperatures

The best temperature for WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original treatment is +15 °C … +25 °C degrees as well as cloudy weather, so the sun does not shine directly on the surface to be treated and dry the oil before it has been absorbed. Night dew should also be avoided during the drying time of the oil as it dilutes the product and changes the composition of the substance. Note that the recommended drying time (approx. 1624 hours) is based on a temperature of + 23 °C degrees and 50 % humidity. The surface is dust-dry about 4 hours after treatment. Lower temperatures may increase the drying time.

Avoid water beading

Properly oiled and treated wood does not absorb water, which reduces swelling and shrinkage. The purpose of wood oil is to impregnate the wood, not to form a thick film on the surface of the wood. This tight and completely non-breathable film is visible as water beading.

The water that accumulates in droplets takes longer to dry and exposes the wood surface to harder wear. In addition, water droplets cause a magnifying glass effect on the surface of the wood and amplify the effect of sun rays on the wood.

However, properly applied wood oil does not create a film on the surface, allowing the wood to breathe and no water beading occurs.

We Recommend WOODCARE.GUIDE WOOD OIL ORIGINAL

WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original contains natural oils as well as modified alkyds. Alkyd particles are very small relative to natural oils such as linseed oil. The combination of micronized alkyd particles and natural oils enables a more even finish and the unique absorption of WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original into the smallest causes of wood, without forming a non-breathable film. Due to high dry solids content, WOODCARE.GUIDE Wood Oil Original has good weather and wear resistance.
